The Patriarchal Reality

Legal Status:

  • Women NOT full legal persons
  • Father/Husband controlled property
  • Could NOT inherit land (except rare widows)
  • Could NOT speak at Veche

Roles:

Young Girl:

  • Domestic training (spinning, weaving, cooking)
  • Watched by family (virginity = marriageability)
  • No freedom of movement

Wife:

  • Managed household
  • Bore children (primary value)
  • Worked fields alongside husband
  • Could be beaten “moderately”

Widow:

  • If sons: minimal rights (sons inherit)
  • If no sons: could manage property until remarriage
  • Vulnerable to exploitation

Elder Woman:

  • Post-menopausal gained respect
  • Midwife, healer roles
  • Advisory (not decision-making)

Exceptions:

  1. Princess (Księżna):
  • Could rule if no male heir (rare)
  • Examples: Olga of Kiev (945-963)
  1. Volkhvynia (Female Shaman):
  • Spiritual authority transcended gender
  • Feared and respected
  1. Warrior Women:
  • Extremely rare
  • Chronicles mention occasional female warriors
  • Likely mythologized (or foreign—Scythian Amazons)
