Seven Principles:

  1. Plan ahead and prepare
    • Know regulations, weather, terrain

  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
    • Use established sites where possible
    • Disperse impact in pristine areas
  3. Dispose of waste properly
    • Pack out all trash
    • Proper human waste disposal

    • Cultural/historical artifacts protected
  5. Minimize campfire impacts
    • Use stove where appropriate
    • Keep fires small, use established rings
    • Fully extinguish, scatter cool ashes
  6. Respect wildlife
    • Observe from distance
    • Never feed animals
    • Store food properly
  7. Be considerate of others
    • Minimize noise
    • Camp away from others
    • Respect local culture

Indigenous Knowledge Respect

UK context (different from colonized lands):

  • Ancient British/Celtic practices (not appropriation to study)
  • Acknowledge sources when teaching techniques
  • Don’t claim personal invention of traditional methods

European context:

  • Sami, Romani, other indigenous European peoples
  • Their traditional knowledge deserves respect
