Leave No Trace (LNT)
Seven Principles:
- Plan ahead and prepare
- Know regulations, weather, terrain
- Minimize waste (repackage food)
- Travel and camp on durable surfaces
- Use established sites where possible
- Disperse impact in pristine areas
- Dispose of waste properly
- Pack out all trash
- Proper human waste disposal
- Leave what you find
- Don’t carve trees, move rocks, take “souvenirs”
- Cultural/historical artifacts protected
- Minimize campfire impacts
- Use stove where appropriate
- Keep fires small, use established rings
- Fully extinguish, scatter cool ashes
- Respect wildlife
- Observe from distance
- Never feed animals
- Store food properly
- Be considerate of others
- Minimize noise
- Camp away from others
- Respect local culture
Indigenous Knowledge Respect
UK context (different from colonized lands):
- Ancient British/Celtic practices (not appropriation to study)
- Acknowledge sources when teaching techniques
- Don’t claim personal invention of traditional methods
European context:
- Sami, Romani, other indigenous European peoples
- Their traditional knowledge deserves respect
