This chapter uses a deliberately rigid safety classification system.
The system is not visual in the graphic sense. It relies on structural priority and repetition rather than illustration.
Each species entry begins with a safety marker composed of two inseparable elements:
- a symbol
- a word
These elements always appear together and always precede descriptive content.
Safety Categories
The system uses three categories only.
- ✅ Safe — No known toxicity when correctly identified and used conservatively within established context.
- ⚠️ Caution — Use involves non-trivial risk, requires preparation, limitation, contextual knowledge, or carries indirect danger.
- ☠️ Deadly — Toxic, highly dangerous, or unsuitable for any form of use.
There are no neutral classifications.
Every plant listed in this chapter has an explicit safety status. Absence of warning is never implied.
Order of Attention
The safety marker is positioned before any functional description.
This ordering is intentional.
The reader encounters risk before curiosity, limitation before possibility, consequence before application.
The structure enforces a pause. That pause is part of the system.
Why Neutrality Is Excluded
Neutral categories encourage assumption.
Assumption is the primary driver of misuse.
By assigning a safety status to every entry, the system prevents plants from being perceived as harmless by default.
Even plants commonly regarded as benign are framed within explicit limits.
Function Over Aesthetics
The symbols used in this system are not decorative.
They are not intended to communicate emotional tone or visual appeal.
They function as immediate cognitive filters.
The eye registers the symbol and word before processing meaning. This reduces the likelihood of selective reading.
Consistency as Safety
The system does not allow variation.
The same symbols, the same words, and the same order are used throughout the chapter.
This repetition is deliberate. Familiarity with the structure accelerates risk recognition.
Safety emerges from predictability.
Limits of the System
This classification does not replace identification, preparation knowledge, or judgment.
It signals relative risk, not permission.
A plant marked as Safe is not safe outside correct context. A plant marked as Caution is not made safe through experience. A plant marked as Deadly admits no exception.
The system exists to interrupt unsafe momentum, not to certify use.
