Užgavėnės was controlled disorder, sanctioned madness, permitted excess occurring at precise moment when old year died and new year struggled toward birth. This was not abstract seasonal metaphor but practical intervention: the community gathered at winter’s weakest point, winter’s most vulnerable moment, and collectively attacked it through noise, fire, feasting, and deliberate violation of normal social boundaries that winter’s isolation had rigidified beyond healthy flexibility.
