[expand]The stag was paramount symbol appearing across countless pieces. The deer represented nobility, seasonal renewal (through antler shedding and regrowth), swiftness, beauty, and possible connection to sun through antler’s radiating form resembling sun rays. The stag depictions varied—some showed naturalistic deer, others abstracted form into pure design, many emphasized antlers through exaggerated size or elaborate branching. The stag’s recurrence wasn’t monotonous repetition but exploration of symbol’s meanings through formal variations, each representation offering different perspective on deer’s symbolic significance.

The eagle embodied aerial power and divine connection. The bird of prey represented sky realm, sharp vision penetrating appearances, swift deadly attack from above, and possible solar associations through flight toward sun. The eagle images showed characteristic hooked beak, powerful talons, and often wings spread in flight or folded in rest. The bird’s predatory nature made it symbol of power and dominance, the eagle being king of sky as lion was king of terrestrial realm.

The feline represented stealth and controlled violence. The big cats—lions, panthers, leopards—appeared frequently in animal style, their depictions emphasizing muscular power, predatory intensity, and coiled energy ready for explosive release. The feline images often showed animals in crouch position suggesting imminent spring, the compressed body communicating potential energy. The cats’ nocturnal hunting and solitary nature added mysterious qualities to their symbolic meanings.

The griffin synthesized terrestrial and aerial power. The composite creature combining eagle’s head and wings with lion’s body represented forces transcending natural categories, the hybrid form suggesting realities beyond ordinary experience. The griffin wasn’t natural animal but symbolic construction, the deliberate combination of predator attributes creating super-predator embodying ultimate power. The griffin’s frequent appearance demonstrated importance of transformation and boundary-crossing in Scythian cosmology.
