Baltic communities lived in close quarters during cold months—extended families sharing small dwellings, limited mobility preventing escape from annoying neighbors, scarce resources creating competitive tensions. By late winter, these pressures threatened social cohesion.

The masked mockery allowed expression of genuine grievances without triggering actual conflict. The villager who resented wealthy neighbor’s stinginess could create exaggerated “miser” character, perform satirical skit highlighting that fault, receive community laughter acknowledging shared perception—all without directly confronting the actual person and creating lasting enmity. The youth frustrated by elder’s arbitrary authority could briefly reverse hierarchy through costume and performance, experiencing momentary power that satisfied rebellious impulses without threatening established order.

The sexual license was carefully bounded excess. Unmarried youth were permitted flirtation and physical contact normally prohibited—dancing closer than usual propriety allowed, exchanging explicit jokes, engaging in public displays that other times would trigger stern parental intervention. But the excess had limits: the masks concealed identity enough to allow daring behavior, but everyone knew who wore which costume, ensuring accountability prevented genuine transgression. The festival was controlled release, not actual anarchy.
