Using equipment effectively required learning—not merely having skis but knowing skiing technique, not just owning sledge but understanding how to load, balance, control it.

The Teaching:

Children learned through observation and practice—watching adults, receiving instruction, gradually building competence. The learning was informal but systematic—progression from simple to complex, from sheltered practice to real-world application, from following experienced skiers to independent travel.

The mistakes taught—falling, losing control, getting lost, experiencing cold when travel took longer than expected. The lessons were sometimes painful but necessary—building judgment, developing skills, creating knowledge that couldn’t be conveyed verbally but only through experience.
