The Sacred Relationship

Perkūnas was son—active defender of family honor, executor of father’s will, violent protector against external threats. The earth goddess Žemyna was mother—nurturer, sustainer, the feminine ground that produced sustenance when properly honored. The sun and moon were divine siblings managing complementary realms of light and darkness.

This divine family was not metaphor requiring priestly interpretation but observable reality reflected in natural phenomena and social structure that any person could understand through direct experience. The sky was clearly supreme, governing all below through consistent celestial mechanics. Thunder and lightning clearly enforced limits—violate sacred oak groves and risk divine strike, break oaths and invite supernatural punishment. The earth clearly provided sustenance when properly cultivated and honored through ritual acknowledgment.

Prayer to these gods was direct address rather than mediated petition. A farmer preparing to plow new field spoke to Dievas acknowledging sky father’s governance, then addressed Perkūnas requesting protection against storm damage to crops, finally honored Žemyna requesting earth mother’s cooperation in producing good harvest. No priest stood between mortal and divine. No sacred text contained required formulas. The prayers were conversations between respectful parties maintaining reciprocal relationship.

Offerings reflected this directness. First fruits of harvest were left at sacred oak—bread, grain, mead—acknowledging divine provision that made abundance possible. During drought, animals were sacrificed to Perkūnas requesting rain through blood offering that demonstrated seriousness of community need and willingness to share scarce resources with divine powers capable of relieving distress. The gods were not distant beings requiring elaborate ritual manipulation but immediate presences responsive to proper respect and genuine need.
