The winter catch required immediate handling:

The freezing provided natural preservation—caught fish froze quickly in winter temperatures, the frozen fish remained edible for extended periods, the natural refrigeration eliminated spoilage concerns. The freezing was climate-provided preservation.

The smoking created long-term storage—smoked fish kept for months, the preservation technique allowed storing surplus catch, the smoked fish diversified winter diet. The smoking was value-added processing.

The immediate consumption provided fresh protein—some catch was eaten shortly after capture, the fresh fish improved nutrition and palatability, the variety relieved monotony of preserved foods. The fresh eating was nutritional benefit.

The distribution shared catch—successful fishers often distributed portions to community members, the sharing maintained social bonds while preventing waste, the distribution was social insurance and generosity. The sharing was community support system.
