While much naalbinding was plain, decorative possibilities existed—creating patterns, using colored yarns, incorporating designs.
The Color Work:
Multiple colored yarns could be used—switching colors during work, creating stripes, geometric patterns, simple designs. The color changes had to be planned—determining where to switch, managing multiple yarn ends, maintaining even tension despite changing materials.
The Texture Variations:
Different stitch types within single garment created texture variations—smooth areas alternating with raised patterns, bands of different structures providing visual interest. The variations also affected fabric properties—denser stitches for areas requiring extra durability, looser stitches where flexibility mattered.
