But the knowledge has faded with its necessity—most modern people, caught in sudden dense fog, would be helpless. The skills of terrain reading, dead reckoning, and multi-sensory navigation have nearly vanished.
Yet in some places, some people still know—the shepherd who finds sheep in hill fog, the coastal fisherman who navigates home through sea mist, the search-and-rescue volunteer who tracks lost hikers through obscurity. The lineage is thin but unbroken.
The mist descends.
