Thatch taught that protection could come from grass—the most abundant, most renewable resource, growing anywhere humans settled. The sophisticated shelter, the waterproof roof, the insulated covering—all created from what others might consider weeds.

This was democratic architecture—not requiring rare materials, extraordinary wealth, or elite craftsmen. Anyone with patience, skill, and access to grassland could create functional roof, protecting their family from weather’s violence.

The grass grows.
The thatcher weaves.
The rain runs off.
And common plants become the shelter that keeps the household dry.
