Coastal foraging knowledge passed through demonstration—the experienced forager took children to the shore, pointed out edible species, explained tidal timing, warned of dangers.

This education was ongoing—not single lesson but years of repeated exposure, gradually building the pattern recognition, the timing sense, the physical skills required for successful foraging.

Mistakes were learning opportunities—the child who collected toxic species received correction (and possible mild illness), embedding the lesson deeply. The timing miscalculation that resulted in being caught by incoming tide taught respect for the ocean’s power.
