Foraging knowledge was valuable—the person who knew where berries grew abundantly, who could identify edible mushrooms, who understood seasonal timing—such person contributed to household food security. This knowledge was guarded to some extent—prime gathering locations were family or community secrets, not shared freely with outsiders.

But knowledge was also shared within community—teaching young people, helping those struggling, maintaining collective capacity for successful foraging. The balance was protecting individual advantage while ensuring community survival through shared basic knowledge.
