Shield wall tactics eventually became obsolete—changing military technology and organization made formations less effective.
The Crossbow and Longbow:
Improved missile weapons could penetrate shields, kill warriors within formation, made standing in static wall increasingly costly. The ranged weapons’ effectiveness forced evolution toward more mobile tactics, reduced effectiveness of purely defensive formations.
The Pike Formations:
Continental pike squares eventually proved superior—longer weapons, deeper formations, more rigid discipline created formations that could defeat shield walls in head-to-head combat, forcing adaptation or obsolescence.
The Gunpowder:
Firearms eventually ended shield wall completely—bullets penetrated any shield, rendered defensive formations futile, required complete reorganization of infantry tactics around firearms rather than edged weapons and shields.
