The Decorative Elements

[expand]The tooling created surface designs through stamps, incising, or carving. The dampened leather was impressionable—stamps pressed into surface creating permanent patterns, sharp tools carved designs, stiff brushes created texture. The tooled leather demonstrated craftsmanship, identified ownership, displayed status, and occasionally depicted protective symbols or meaningful imagery. The tooling was purely surface treatment not affecting structural integrity, allowing decoration without compromising function.

The dyeing introduced color using natural materials. Plant-based dyes—walnut hulls for brown, onion skins for yellow, certain berries for red—soaked into leather creating permanent color. Mineral dyes using iron compounds created blacks and grays. The dyed leather allowed color-coordinated equipment, visual distinction between different units or families, and aesthetic elaboration beyond natural leather tones. The quality dye work resisted fading and didn’t transfer onto horses or clothing, demonstrating proper technique and material selection.

The metal attachments added structural reinforcement and decorative accent. Bronze or iron plates protected wear points—where girths attached, where rider’s legs rubbed, where weapons might strike. The metal fittings served functional purposes (distributing stress, providing attachment points, protecting leather) while simultaneously allowing artistic expression through shaped, engraved, or gilded metalwork. The most elaborate saddles featured extensive metal decoration transforming utilitarian equipment into status symbols.

The fur or fabric coverings provided additional comfort and display. Sheep skin with wool attached created warm comfortable seat for winter riding. Silk or embroidered fabric covers demonstrated wealth while protecting expensive leather from wear. These coverings were usually removable, allowing adjustment to season or occasion, practical for daily use yet replaceable with elaborate versions for ceremonies or important meetings.
