Crabs:
Hiding under rocks and in pools, crabs were caught by hand (requiring quick reflexes to avoid pinching) or using simple traps baited with fish. They were boiled, the meat extracted, providing substantial protein.
Different crab species inhabited different zones—some in shallow tidepools, some in deeper water accessible only at extreme low tides, some best caught at night.
Lobsters:
Where present, lobsters were valuable catch—large, meaty, relatively easy to preserve through drying or salting. They hid in rocky crevices, were caught by hand or using baited traps.
