Christianity created ambivalence about weapon symbolism—recognizing martial necessity while also emphasizing peace, trying to redirect warrior values toward service of Church while not completely eliminating them.

The Blessed Weapons:

Christian warriors had weapons blessed—priests invoking divine protection, adding religious symbolism to martial objects, attempting to make violence holy when directed toward approved purposes. The blessing didn’t change weapon’s function but added spiritual layer, claimed God’s approval for violence that served Christian aims.

The Shift in Values:

Christian ideology emphasized mercy, turning other cheek, peace over violence—values that contradicted warrior culture celebrating combat prowess and weapon mastery. The tension was never fully resolved—creating compromise where martial valor was acceptable if directed toward defending faith, where weapons remained prestigious but their use was supposedly constrained by Christian morality.
