MIGRATION LORE: The Völkerwanderung

January 25, 2026 1 min read

Movement was not failure but transformation—entire peoples abandoning ancestral territories, carrying everything portable, leaving behind graves and fields and memories, seeking new lands where survival was possible, accepting that staying meant death while moving offered uncertain hope. The Völkerwanderung (the Wandering of Peoples) was not single event but extended process spanning centuries, wave after wave of Germanic tribes relocating, sometimes fleeing pressure from the east, sometimes seeking opportunity in the south, sometimes simply following leaders who promised better territories beyond the horizon. This was migration as cultural characteristic, the willingness to abandon the familiar for the unknown, to risk everything on movement rather than accept gradual extinction through remaining in place.
