Understanding parts:

  • Standing end: Long section of rope (not being worked)
  • Working end: Short section being used to tie knot
  • Bight: U-shaped bend in rope (not crossing itself)
  • Loop: Rope crossing itself forming circle
  • Turn: Complete wrap around object

Knot strength:

  • Rope breaking strength reduced by knots
  • Simple overhand: ~50% strength loss
  • Well-tied knots: ~20-40% loss
  • Wet rope: Weaker (30-40% reduction)
