- Flexible (bends, springs back)
- Hard edge (holds sharp)
- Even temper (no weak spots)
The Test:
- Bend blade 45° (should return straight)
- Cut nail with edge (should bite in, not chip)
- Ring test (tap with knuckle – clear ring = good)
Imported Blades:
Frankish Swords:
- “Ulfberht” signature (Rhineland workshops)
- Premium steel (crucible steel or pattern-welded)
- Traded via Vikings to Rus
- Cost: 10-20 cattle (fortune)
Damascus Steel:
- Middle Eastern (Syria, Persia)
- Legendary quality (wavy pattern, incredible sharpness)
- Extremely rare in Slavic lands (royal treasures only)
