The presentation of weapons marked ceremonial climax. The candidate’s male relatives—father if living, uncles, elder brothers, grandfather—formally presented warrior’s equipment: bow with arrows, sword or dagger, lance if applicable, armor if family could afford it, and most importantly horse if candidate lacked personal mount. These were not merely gifts but transfer of responsibility and authority—the weapons authorized killing, the armor acknowledged warrior’s value worth protecting, the horse provided mobility making warrior dangerous rather than merely armed.

The naming ceremony sometimes accompanied initiation, particularly if candidate received warrior-name replacing childhood name. The new name typically referenced accomplishment, physical characteristic, spiritual vision, or family lineage—”Swift Arrow,” “Bear-Killer,” “Storm-Rider,” or dynastic names linking to distinguished ancestors. The name change marked identity transformation, permanently distinguishing initiated warrior from boy he had been. Some traditions retained childhood name while adding warrior-name as supplement, others completely replaced original name requiring everyone to use new designation.

The oath-taking bound new warrior to tribal military obligations. The candidate swore loyalty to tribal leaders, promised to respond to war summons, committed to following battle commands, and accepted warrior code requiring courage, honor, and mutual defense of fellow warriors. This was not formality but legal contract—violation meant severe consequences including exile or death. The oath was witnessed by gods through ritual invocation, making it spiritually binding, and observed by community making it socially enforceable.

The scarification or tattooing marked permanent bodily transformation. The patterns varied by tribe and individual—some received simple marks indicating warrior status, others elaborate designs referencing family lineage or personal achievements, still others accumulated tattoos across lifetime documenting military career. The marks served practical identification function (distinguishing warriors from non-warriors, marking tribal affiliation) and spiritual protection function (certain patterns believed to offer divine defense or enhance combat prowess). The pain of application was final ordeal, endured while community watched, demonstrating one last time that new warrior could suffer without complaint.
