The Social and Military Functions

[expand]The pre-battle rite sought divine guidance and unified warriors’ consciousness before combat. The ceremony allowed leadership to communicate strategy while participants were open and receptive, created shared experience generating group cohesion, demonstrated divine favor through successful rite, and sometimes genuinely revealed tactical insights through altered perception. Whether insights came from gods or simply from unbounded consciousness processing information differently, the practical result was same—warriors entered battle confident, coordinated, and convinced of divine support.

The healing ceremonies addressed illness through spiritual intervention. The sick person participated if able, or shaman performed rite on their behalf, seeking cause of illness, negotiating with disease spirits, requesting divine healing, or simply generating hope and confidence supporting natural recovery. The hemp vapor’s analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties might provide genuine medical benefit beyond spiritual effects, though Scythians didn’t distinguish clearly between spiritual and physical causes or cures.

The initiation rites brought young warriors into adult male consciousness through shared hemp experience with senior warriors. The youth who survived their first vapor journey proved courage, demonstrated ability to navigate altered states without panicking, received direct spiritual instruction from ancestors or gods encountered during journey, and emerged marked by experience separating them from childhood. The initiation was ordeal—frightening, physically challenging, psychologically demanding—but successful completion earned recognition as full warrior.

The diplomatic ceremonies created bonds between separate tribes or clans through shared hemp rite. Representatives from negotiating parties entered tent together, breathed same smoke, traveled spirit realms simultaneously, emerged with enhanced mutual understanding or at minimum shared secret experience creating basis for trust. The ceremony was particularly valuable for establishing alliances between peoples lacking common language—the hemp communion transcended verbal communication, creating connection through shared consciousness more fundamental than words.
