The Processing Methods

[expand]The hemp preparation shared techniques with flax but had distinctive requirements:

The retting softened woody stems—soaking in water allowed bacterial decomposition of outer material, the process was similar to flax but required longer duration, the extended retting was necessary for hemp’s tougher structure. The retting was essential first step.

The breaking crushed retted stems—repeated beating with wooden tools separated fiber from woody core, the physical labor was substantial, the breaking was most labor-intensive processing stage. The breaking demanded physical effort.

The hackling combed separated fibers—pulling through sharp pins removed short fibers and remaining debris, the repeated combing produced progressively finer fiber, the hackling refined raw material into spinnable product. The combing was quality improvement.

The grading separated quality levels—long fine fibers were distinguished from short coarse material, the sorting directed each grade toward appropriate uses, the discrimination was quality control. The grading was value optimization.

The seasonal coordination timed activities—processing occurred during winter when outdoor work was impossible, the indoor labor utilized otherwise-idle time, the seasonal allocation was efficient time management. The timing was labor optimization.
