The lighting employed bark torches—resinous bark pieces burned providing light, the bark torches were simple illumination before candles were affordable, the lighting function was practical necessity. The torches were primitive lighting.

The repairs used bark patches—damaged items were mended with bark pieces, the repairs extended useful life of other objects, the patch material was readily available. The repairs were waste reduction.
