The Protective Function

[expand]The stogastulpis’s primary purpose was supernatural defense—warding against evil spirits, deflecting curses, preventing illness and misfortune from entering household. The protection operated through multiple mechanisms: the elevated position allowed early detection of approaching threats, the carved figure’s vigilant stance suggested constant watchfulness, the symbolic forms (warrior, rooster) indicated active defensive capability rather than passive vulnerability.

The lightning protection was important consideration. Perkūnas was thunder god whose lightning struck randomly unless directed by divine intention. The stogastulpis representing Perkūnas or his associated symbols (oak, horse) was understood as creating relationship with thunder god that might deflect lightning strikes—not guaranteed immunity but improved probability of surviving storms without catastrophic fire. This belief had practical correlation: the elevated wooden post actually could attract lightning, functioning as primitive lightning rod directing strikes away from main dwelling structure.

The evil eye defense was critical function. Malevolent observers—jealous neighbors, resentful enemies, wandering spirits with harmful intentions—could curse household through concentrated negative attention. The stogastulpis intercepted this attention, absorbing negative energy before it could affect human occupants, sometimes reflecting curse back toward sender through mirror-like protective properties attributed to certain carved symbols.

The boundary marking function established protected territory. The stogastulpis visible from distance announced “this dwelling is protected,” warning potential supernatural threats that attack would be resisted, informing travelers that household was occupied by persons capable of commissioning protective carvings rather than being vulnerable to easy exploitation. The protective boundary extended from stogastulpis downward, creating invisible dome of safety encompassing entire dwelling.
