The specific animals represented carried particular associations, the choice of imagery being meaningful rather than arbitrary.

The serpent/dragon appeared frequently, the undulating form being suitable for elongated terminals like ship prows, the creature’s dangerous and mysterious nature making it powerful symbol. The serpent imagery might invoke protective magic—the fearsome appearance warning enemies, the powerful form suggesting strength and danger. The distinction between naturalistic snake and fantastic dragon was often blurred, the Germanic tradition not always clearly differentiating between real and mythological creatures, both categories being symbolically potent.

The predator heads—wolves, bears, boars—represented martial ferocity, warrior culture, dangerous power that was both threatening and protective depending on perspective. The warrior bearing weapon with predator head claimed kinship with beast’s power, announced willingness to fight with animal fury, invoked protection from creature’s spirit. The predator symbolism was not merely aggressive but also protective—the fierce beast guarding treasure, the dangerous animal defending territory, the symbol working dualistically as threat to enemies and guardian to allies.

The horse heads connected to horse’s sacred status, to its association with divine powers, to its practical importance in Germanic culture. The horse head terminal on objects suggested divine favor, claimed connection to powers associated with sacred horses, invoked protection that horse symbolism provided. The horse was simultaneously practical animal and sacred creature, the symbolism operating on both pragmatic and spiritual levels.

The bird heads might represent ravens (possibly Odin-associated), eagles (symbols of military power), or other avian forms. The bird’s ability to fly suggested connection to sky realm, to divine powers dwelling above, to perspective that transcended earthbound limitations. The bird terminals might invoke divine sight, claim connection to powers observing from above, suggest transcendence of ordinary physical constraints.
