Berserker tradition had cult-like elements—initiation, exclusive knowledge, special relationship with gods.

The Odin Connection:

Berserkers were specifically Odin’s warriors—the All-Father himself was described as entering berserker-like states, teaching these techniques to select followers, granting battle-fury as divine gift. The connection made berserker rage sacred practice, ritual act rather than mere psychological state, theological phenomenon requiring divine favor.

The Animal Transformation:

The wearing of bear or wolf skins wasn’t mere costume but spiritual practice—identifying with animal, channeling animal power, temporarily becoming animal. The transformation stories in mythology provided precedent—Odin changed shapes, heroes became animals, boundary between human and beast was permeable for those with knowledge.

The Initiation:

Becoming berserker likely required initiation—learning techniques, receiving training from experienced practitioners, demonstrating capacity to achieve and control rage. The initiation created exclusive group, maintained knowledge within brotherhood, ensured new berserkers understood both power and dangers of practice.
