Julius Caesar, invading Britain (55-54 BCE), encountered chariot warfare at its peak. His description in Commentarii de Bello Gallico provides unique eyewitness account:

“They combine the mobility of cavalry with the staying power of infantry… through daily practice they can control their horses even on steep slopes, check them at full gallop, and turn them on a sixpence. They can run along the chariot pole, stand on the yoke, and get back into the chariot as quick as lightning.”

Caesar was impressed but not intimidated. His legions, with disciplined formation and effective missile weapons, defeated the British chariots. The encounter demonstrated that chariots, while impressive, could be countered by professional infantry employing appropriate tactics.
