The Enduring Mystery

Despite scientific analysis, mistletoe retains mystery—not supernatural but the mystery of any complex organism whose full properties remain incompletely understood.

Why does oak-mistletoe differ from apple-mistletoe or poplar-mistletoe? The host tree affects the parasite’s chemistry, creating subspecies variations that ancient healers recognized and modern science is still cataloging.

How did the Druids know the sixth night after new moon was optimal for harvest? Was it genuine observation of potency variation, or was it ritual timing that happened to align with chemical reality, or was it arbitrary that became effective through belief?

These questions may never have definitive answers. The knowledge was oral, the practitioners are gone, the tradition was broken. What remains is fragment—enough to work with, not enough to fully reconstruct what was lost.

Between sky and earth.
Between life and death.
The all-heal grows where nothing else can.
And mystery remains in every green leaf on the winter oak.
