The Bladesmiths:

Apprenticeship:

  • 10-15 years training
  • Learn:
    • Ore selection
    • Smelting
    • Forging techniques
    • Heat treatment (quenching, tempering)

Quality Indicators:

Poor Blade:

  • Soft (bends, won’t hold edge)
  • OR Brittle (shatters on impact)
  • Uneven (thick spots, thin spots)

Good Blade:

  • Flexible (bends, springs back)
  • Hard edge (holds sharp)
  • Even temper (no weak spots)

The Test:

  • Bend blade 45° (should return straight)
  • Cut nail with edge (should bite in, not chip)
  • Ring test (tap with knuckle – clear ring = good)

Imported Blades:

Frankish Swords:

  • “Ulfberht” signature (Rhineland workshops)
  • Premium steel (crucible steel or pattern-welded)
  • Traded via Vikings to Rus
  • Cost: 10-20 cattle (fortune)

Damascus Steel:

  • Middle Eastern (Syria, Persia)
  • Legendary quality (wavy pattern, incredible sharpness)
  • Extremely rare in Slavic lands (royal treasures only)
